Vocational Rehabilitation Support Assists At-Risk Individuals

Employment is viewed as one of the benchmarks for successful self-support and corresponds with quality of life and self-esteem. Yet, persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) are too often shut out of the labor market. The US Department of Labor reports that in 2021, 19.1% of working age people with a disability were employed compared to 63.7% of non-disabled individuals.

Vocational Rehabilitation Services

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) is a process which enables persons with functional, psychological, developmental, cognitive, and emotional disabilities, impairments or health disabilities to overcome barriers to accessing, maintaining or returning to employment or other useful occupations. Vocational Rehabilitation services may include any and all of the following:

  • a disability(ies) assessment
  • job counseling, guidance and referral services
  • physical and mental rehabilitation
  • vocational (job) and other training
  • on-the-job training
  • financial assistance while receiving some voc rehab services
  • transportation needed to get to some voc rehab services
  • an interpreter (if deaf)
  • reader services (if blind)
  • transitioning help (from school to work for students)
  • personal assistance services
  • rehabilitation technology services and devices
  • supported employment services, and
  • help finding a job

Assistance is Available

Vocational Rehabilitation promotes positive change and growth. Unfortunately, there are some individuals that do not qualify for government funded vocational rehabilitation services. There are also some employment expenses that are not covered by government funded vocational rehabilitation services. As such, the To The Rescue HOPE Foundation has a vocational rehabilitation program to assist at-risk individuals who may need funding that is not available elsewhere.
